On the last day of February this year, the moving trailer that was transporting the entire 60,000 Sketchbook Project collection from Brooklyn, New York to St Petersburg in Florida, caught fire while driving through Baltimore. Luckily, no one was injured.

Around 70 per cent of the collection was saved by volunteers and firefighters who moved the books from the trailer. Then, community members from a local church helped move them, box by box, into their car park. Most of the unharmed books arrived at their new home in St Pete and the damage is now being assessed. It is estimated that up to 7,000 sketchbooks have been lost.

The Project said, it will be months before artists will know the status of  sketchbooks, in the collection.

However many artists had arranged for their sketchbooks to be digitised, including 11 CLOSE CALLS by AVril Macdonald.
