I create original and hand-inked prints. These are based on my photography work featuring mainly London and Scottish landscapes.
In London: Tree landscapes, London roofscapes, and Victorian monumental sculpture are amongst just a few of my subjects.
In Scotland and Wales: I am inspired by landscapes and especially the Northern and Western Isles of Scotland.
Printmaking is endlessly fascinating because there are so many ways to produce prints and the results are by no means predictable, which I like. I am interested in the chance aspect of the outcome of some of my prints.
I work from a studio at home and in various workshops for printmaking, most recently at the London Print Studio. I made many prints at the Institute in East Finchley, but also at London and East London Print Studios and the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertford.
My work is a response to those wild and beautiful landscapes in Scotland and also to places I walk in London, where I live, and other places I have visited. I enjoy walking and the kinaesthetic experience of wind or the noise of a fresh breeze through telephone wires.
Most of my work comes from that solitary experience, whether I am sketching or photographing. I try to let my hands make shapes and my eye choose colours. Some of my local, London landscapes have been described as slightly melancholy and even gothic.
I find nature fascinating because of the paradox of its simplicity and complexity. I feel privileged that my job as an artist allows me time to look at it and record my responses through my art.
